The fear behind this question is usually a memory: the last big system change, the consultants, the migration that overran. AI does not work that way. Your ERP stays exactly where it is, doing exactly what it does, and it stays the single source of truth. The AI is a new colleague who learned to use your existing systems, not a new system your business has to move into.
How AI sits alongside your ERP
Modern business platforms, from Microsoft Dynamics 365 (Business Central) to courier portals and accounting packages, expose the same controlled doorways to software that they do to people. An AI system uses those doorways. It reads what your team can read, and where it writes, it writes the same records a person would create, subject to checks a person never gets: every field validated, every action logged, every uncertain case held back for human review.
That last part matters more than the technology. A well-built AI system knows what it is not sure about. When an order is ambiguous or a customer record does not quite match, it does not guess; it queues the case for a person, with everything they need to decide in front of them.
What we have integrated
This is not theoretical for us. For one of the UK's largest salt manufacturers, we built an AI order agent that reads incoming orders and books them into Microsoft Dynamics 365 (Business Central) as complete sales orders: sixty thousand orders a year, each one processed in under ten seconds where the manual check took three to four minutes. For the same business, an AI customer service agent answers enquiries from live stock, pricing, order history and delivery information across systems that previously meant a dozen separate logins.
The integration layer should belong to you
One question to ask any provider: when this is built, who owns the connections? Some vendors run your integrations through their own platform, which means leaving them later costs you the plumbing as well as the product.
